MAKING AND DOING SCIENCE IN SPACE (AND ON EARTH!)
Donate

let's Make & Do Science in Space (and on Earth!)

Picture
THINK -  Let's Do Science Together in Space & On Earth Too!
CREATE - Inspired by the cartoon creator, Rube Goldberg, let's make a "Machine" for Your Habitat!
  • What’s the most ridiculous way to get from one end of your habitat to the other?
  • What is the most complex way to do a very simple thing.
  • Include humor and narrative with your device!
  • Make your design or artwork realistic or fanciful!
  • Share images and videos of your idea or your actual device on your social media using #DesignYourHabitat or via our submission system.

Check out this animated version of the Self-Operated Napkin - Rube Goldberg Machine.
Professor Butts and the Self-Operating Napkin (1931). Soup spoon (A) is raised to mouth, pulling string (B) and thereby jerking ladle (C), which throws cracker (D) past toucan (E). Toucan jumps after cracker and perch (F) tilts, upsetting seeds (G) into pail (H). Extra weight in pail pulls cord (I), which opens and ignites lighter (J), setting off skyrocket (K), which causes sickle (L) to cut string (M), allowing pendulum with attached napkin to swing back and forth, thereby wiping chin. CREATE - Design a Better Item for Your Habitat!
Inspired by Astronaut Don Pettit’s design of an espresso cup that would work well in a space habitat…
  • Design an improvement for your real Earth habitat or your imagined one in space!
  • Share pictures or videos of your newly designed item via #DesignYourHabitat in your social media or use our submission system!
CREATE - Trick Your Brain (with an At-home Sensory Illusion)
Check out this cool activity you can do at home.
“As amazing as the human brain is, it’s capable of being fooled very easily by information it receives from your five senses. In this video I will demonstrate a thermodynamics experiment that can easily be performed at home with simple materials you already have, that can trick your brain (and the brains of your family members) in a fun, fantastic way!” -Daniel G. Benes, Science Popularizer and Host of Daniel G Benes Science Shows
