breaking news
Create your own newscast or article about space!
By Kimberly jones

BREAKING NEWS

Activity Duration: 60-120 minutes
Recommended Age: 10-18

Journalists report news stories so everyone can get the latest information. Most people now get their news from social media sites with quick and interesting videos or news articles. Learn how to give your own news report by following the W5H format - Who, What, Where, When, Why, and How?

In this activity, students will learn all the information they need to make a news report.
EXPERIENCE
A news article explains a real life event, with a lot of information in a limited number of words.
News posts are:
  • Factual and informational
  • Written in short paragraphs of 1-2 sentences
  • Use plain language (language that everyone can understand)
  • Including quotes from key people such as experts and witnesses
  • Written in third person
Watch the "Creating a News Report" video on the left to learn more about writing news reports.
THINK
Did you know that to write a good news report it's important to concentrate on four elements?
  • Facts: the public expects (true) facts. if you don't use facts, your writing can became an opinion piece or a lifestyle article.
  • Context: Answers the questions  "Why should I care?," or "Why should I read this?"
  • Impact: Impact keeps readers in tune beyond the headline and answers the question "Why should WE care?"
  • Emotion: Commands attention but lets the reader decide what is important the story.

CREATE
In this activity, you will pick a real or fake space news story.
  • After getting all of the information, film a short 1-2 minute newscast or write a short news article to report the findings. Keep the newscast as is or edit it in a free video editor.
  • Once the news story is complete, draw a picture or find one online to accompany the story. Many news sites use interesting pictures to grab people’s attention!
